WHM Reseller Hosting Guide: How to Create and Manage cPanel Accounts

Step-by-step guide to using WHM, creating cPanel accounts, username limits, passwordless cP access, package quotas, and custom NameServers.

WHM Reseller Hosting Guide: How to Create and Manage cPanel Accounts

WHM (Web Host Manager) is the industry-standard management platform that allows web design agencies and resellers to create and control independent cPanel accounts for clients under their own brand. On Skyversal NVMe SSD infrastructure, provisioning a new cPanel account takes an average of 6 to 9 seconds.

⚡ Prerequisites & WHM Access Ports

  • WHM Access URL: Sent via email upon activation (e.g. https://yourdomain.com:2087 or https://server-ip:2087).
  • Port Details: Port 2087 for secure SSL connection, Port 2086 for standard HTTP connection.
  • Login Credentials: Reseller username and password defined in your Skyversal dashboard.

Step 1 — Create a Custom Hosting Package

Before creating cPanel accounts, define a hosting package specifying disk, bandwidth, and email limits:

  1. In WHM left sidebar search, type Add a Package and click it.
  2. Package Name: Name your package (e.g. Starter-Plan or Agency-Gold).
  3. Disk Space (MB): Set maximum NVMe SSD storage quota (e.g. 5000 MB).
  4. Monthly Bandwidth (MB): Set monthly transfer limit or select Unlimited.
  5. Max Email Accounts / Databases: Define email address and SQL database limits.
  6. Click Add at the bottom to save your package.

Step 2 — Create a New cPanel Account & Username Rules

Steps to provision an isolated cPanel account for your client:

  1. Click Create a New Account from the left sidebar.
  2. Domain: Enter client domain name (e.g. clientdomain.com — do not add www).
  3. Username Rules: Usernames must start with a letter, contain lowercase alphanumeric characters, and be 16 characters max (8 characters on legacy servers). Special characters and spaces are not allowed.
  4. Password: Set a strong 12+ character password.
  5. Choose a Package: Select the package created in Step 1.
  6. Click Create. WHM provisions the account in ~8 seconds.
💡 Pro Tip: Passwordless Direct cPanel Access (Impersonation) To access your client's cPanel without asking for their password, navigate to WHM > List Accounts. Click the orange cP icon next to the domain name to log directly into the cPanel interface with reseller admin privileges.

Step 3 — 100% White-Label & Custom NameServer Setup

Configure custom NameServers (ns1/ns2.yourdomain.com) so clients see your agency branding:

  • Go to WHM > Basic WebHost Manager Setup.
  • Enter your custom NameServer hostnames in the Primary / Secondary Nameserver fields (e.g. ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com).
  • In your domain registrar panel, register these hostnames as Glue A Records pointing to your server IP address.
  • Navigate to WHM > Customization to upload your agency logo and support links to the cPanel theme.
⏳ DNS Propagation Warning: After saving custom NameServers and Glue Records, global DNS propagation takes 2 to 24 hours (up to 48 hours for certain TLDs) to take full effect worldwide.

🛠️ Troubleshooting (Common WHM Errors)

🔴 Error: That domain already exists in the userdata

Cause: The domain is already assigned to another cPanel account or DNS zone on the server.

Fix: Delete the previous DNS zone or cPanel account via WHM List Accounts or DNS Zone Manager.

🟡 Account creation failed: You have reached your account allocation limit

Cause: Reached maximum disk quota or account limit allocated to your reseller plan.

Fix: Clear unused disk space or upgrade your Reseller plan in the Skyversal dashboard.
