SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a visitor's browser. This encryption prevents external eavesdroppers from reading and modifying information transferred between nodes (such as passwords, credit card numbers, or forms).

1. Difference Between SSL and TLS

While used interchangeably in mainstream contexts, they represent a cryptographic evolution in network security:

  • SSL (Secure Sockets Layer): The original cryptographic protocol developed by Netscape in the 1990s. SSL 2.0 and 3.0 are deprecated due to historical vulnerabilities.
  • TLS (Transport Layer Security): The modern, significantly more secure successor to SSL. Every "SSL certificate" sold today runs TLS 1.2 or TLS 1.3 algorithms in the background, though the term "SSL" remains popular in marketing.

2. How Does SSL Work? (The SSL/TLS Handshake)

Before transmitting page content, the browser and server perform an SSL Handshake in milliseconds to agree on key exchange protocols:

3. Types of SSL Certificates

Sertificates differ based on validation depths and mapped domain scopes:

A. Validation Depth Levels

  • Domain Validation (DV SSL): The most common type. The Certificate Authority (CA) verifies domain ownership only. Provisions in minutes. Let's Encrypt certificates are DV.
  • Organization Validation (OV SSL): Requires verifying corporate registration details alongside domain control. Perfect for commercial business sites. Takes 1-3 business days.
  • Extended Validation (EV SSL): The highest trust level. CAs perform rigorous legal, operational, and physical validation checks, listing registered company info in cert audits.

B. Domain Scopes

  • Single Domain SSL: Secures one domain name (e.g. yoursite.com and its www version).
  • Multi-Domain (SAN/UCC) SSL: Maps multiple independent domains in a single certificate (e.g. site1.com, site2.net, blog.xyz).
  • Wildcard SSL: Secures a domain and unlimited subdomains under it (e.g. *.yoursite.com covers blog.yoursite.com, panel.yoursite.com).

7. Common SSL Errors & Resolutions

NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID

Occurs when the request target domain does not match domains configured on the certificate. (e.g. Using a cert built for yoursite.com on store.yoursite.com). Solve by using Wildcards or provisioning separate certs for targeted subdomains.

NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID (Expired Certificate)

Sertificate validity date has lapsed. Verify cron jobs for auto-renewals or refresh details manually at your certificate authority.

Mixed Content Warnings

Triggered when files (images, script tags, fonts) load via unencrypted http:// paths inside an encrypted HTTPS wrapper. Solve by mapping all database links and asset tags to use https:// protocol.
